From PrecarityMap
1. Group name (in original language):
espazo autoxestionada da Deriva/Centro Social Atreu!
2. City/geographical area:
A Coruña (Galiza-Spanish state)
3. Short description (including brief history):
We’re a group of autonomous people of A Coruña that, since 2001 have build different struggles against war, militarism, precariousness, contamination, and so one. In this period we have worked in building alternative ways of cultural expression in our town. Through this struggles and activities, we have put on a pair of social centers, one of them closed by the municipality. Today we’re working in, and beyond, the Atreu! Social center, in A Coruña
4. Type of group: (e.g. assembly of several groups, trade union, magazine/alter media, social centre, militant research group, immigrant support group, queer action group etc.):
We’re an assembly group that do differente things: some of us do action-research, some prepare activities (political, cultural,…), some do the administration of the social center, some work with the hacklab, some with the popular library, all of us build street struggles
5. Issues addressed (e.g. migration, call centres, care, universities etc.):
Now we’re working on the project of a precarity office, with at least an autonomous network for exchange of goods, services, information, opportunities, about jobs, homes, culture…, and legal advice
6. Repertoire of practices (e.g. direct action, information & assistance, support, performances etc.):
We’ve with different practices. In the field of street struggle, we’ve worked with direct action, and with different ways of action, like performances, for example. We work normally with squares occupation, so as to express cultural initiative. We’ve been interested through these last years in the circulation of information. At the time we’ve started working on political trips, so as to know directly the situation and practices of other european political networks
7. Initiatives and open political processes:
Besides the different (micro-)struggles we’re engaged in, and besides the process of the building of our precarity office, we’re engaged in the construction of a solid network of the galician social centers, with an additional link, beyond the borders, to Porto, in northern Portugal. The existence of social centers is quite new in Galiza; that’s why one of our main purposes for the future is the hardening of our network
8. Struggles you are involved or you know in your city (if possible, including contact):
The struggles in our place tend to be micro-struggles and normally they do not last too long. Anyway, seem to us important to say that in Galiza there’s a quite strong nationalist movement. That means, that there’s struggles that normally in other places don’t exist, linked to the national construction and to the defence of the galician languages. Some of us are engaged to these struggles.
9. Networks in which the group is participating and/or links with other groups:
At the time, we have differents levels of links to other groups and political realities. In our town (A Coruña) we’ve very good relations with all the antagonists networks. At the galician level, we take part at the social centers network. Beyond, we have some links, not very solid, with political realities from northern Portugal, that’s to say, Porto. At the level of the spanish state, we’ve relations with different autonomous networks, from Andalusia (Malaga, Sevilla), Madrid and Barcelone. The relations with groups from other places are scarce. At the european level, recently we have built links to political networks in Italy.
10. Brief explanation of involvement in the MayDay mobilizations:
We’ve taken part in a pair of assemblies of the euromayday; however, we’ve taken part only as observers. At the time, we’re thinking how to translate the proposal of the euromayday to our political reality. Euromayday has not much followers here in Galiza; this is one of the reasons why we’re not putting on a mayday event here in 2006.
11. Research developed (in case you have any, present the issues and method):
We’re working on a map of the precariousness in our town. Precarity is a reality widespread here (call-centers, Zara global headquarters,...). Probably we’ll have this research ready by the summer of 2006.
